Born to a Palakkad Iyer family in the year 1984, Priyamani grew up in Bangalore; her real name is Priya Vasudev Mani Iyer. She has appeared in a number of films of different languages including Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil. Priyamani has gained immense popularity after she won a National Film Award in 2006 for the best actress for her outstanding role in a Tamil movie called ‘Paruthi Veeran’.

After she completed her school, she started modelling at a small scale in print media advertisements. Her popularity was growing gradually and she started to get movie offers from various directors who happened to see her modelling pictures. Priyamani was growing as a popular future star and was approached for many movie offers for a lead role. She finally starred in a Tamil movie ‘Kangalal Kaidhu Sei’ by Bharathiraja. This first movie by Priyamani was released in the year 2004.

Her debut in a Telugu movie was ‘Evare Atagaadu’, which was not a success. Then Priyamani decided to try her luck in the Malayalam film industry. Her first Malayalam movie was ‘Satyam’ where she was paired with Prithviraj Sukumaran. Unfortunately, this movie too did not do well. She was experiencing some tough days and then, despite of all this, she was offered a Tamil movie opposite Dhanush. Balu Mahendra, a renowned Tamil movie director and cinematographer saw the potential in Priyamani and offered her this movie called ‘Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam’. For her performance in this movie, she was tremendously acknowledged and praised by many, but unfortunately, the movie was not a very successful venture.

Her success in movies was initiated in the year 2006 through a movie called ‘Pellaina Kothalo’ where she was paired with Jagapathi Babu. This movie was about the life and typical situations of a newly wed couple. This movie was a hit and a successful venture even though it was a low budget film and had modest stars. This movie opened flood gates of success in Tollywood for Priyamani.

In the year 2007, Priyamani was seen in a Tamil movie called ‘Paruthiveeran’ directed by Ameer Sultan. She was paired opposite a newcomer, Karthi Sivakumar in this movie. This movie was about the rural life and a young villager who is very notorious in Madurai. This movie was acclaimed by critics and priyamani was appreciated for her acting skills. This movie was a surprise hit and a blockbuster. This movie marked her eminent skills in the eyes of the critics and the audience as well. She won a National Film Award, then a Filmfare award in the South, Award from Tamil Nadu state. She also won an award at the Cinefan festival of Arab and Asian Cinema.

In 2007, she again starred in a blockbuster movie called ‘Yamadonga’ paired opposite Junior NTR and another Tamil film called ‘Malaikottai’ paired with Vishal. Priyamani was acknowledged for her role in a Malayalam movie called ‘Thirakkatha’ in 2008. She also won a filmfare Award for this movie. Last year, in 2009, she was seen in two Tamil movies called ‘Arumugam’ and ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’. She entered into Kannada cinema as a debutant in the movie ‘Raam’ paired opposite Puneet Rajkumar.
